Call for submissions for Vitamin Zzz

SLEEPYHEADCENTRAL seeks submissions for its provocative new quarterly anthology! VitaminZzz is devoted to a mainstream readership of people interested in sleep health from a literary perspective.

SHC is looking for creative writing on sleep health, sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, sleep habits, dreams… anything directly correlated with the biological process of sleep.

Specifically, SHC is looking for:

  • flash fiction (under 1000 words)
  • poetry (free verse, formal, prose poems)
  • personal essays (under 2000 words)
  • creative nonfiction (under 2000 words)

Only the highest quality literary writing should be submitted.

UPDATED: SHC could use more flash fiction, prose poems, short stories, personal essays or creative nonfiction. Topics that would be especially appealing to SHC editors at this time include sleep studies, sleep disorders, fatigue and daytime sleepiness, forced sleep deprivation, sleep drugs and substances, beds and pillows, painsomnia, how illness affects sleep/vice versa, or witnessing others with sleep disorders.

Who should submit?

Manuscript submissions should come from people seeking to share sleep health information or personal experiences with sleep problems, people suffering from unexplained or undiagnosed sleep problems, and caregivers concerned about the sleep problems of their patients.

All perspectives are sought and welcomed: humorous, clinical, personal, spiritual, political, fantastic, familial, experimental.

At this time, SHC cannot pay but hopes to seek grant money in 2018 to fund this project.

Reading period:

For Winter 2018 edition: December 31, 2017

→ For Spring 2018 edition: March 31, 2018

→ For Summer 2018 edition: June 30, 2018

→ For Autumn 2018 edition: September 30, 2018

No themes for now. We’re hoping to let contributors’ submissions determine each issue’s theme. If we have too many pieces for any particular issue we may hold them for the next one; we will confirm this with each contributor, if this happens.

Each contribution accepted will be arranged as a graphic panel rather than as a blog post in order to protect line breaks. The curator is open to other ideas on presentation.

You may wish to learn more about this project by visiting our Vitamin Zzz page.

How to submit your work for consideration

1. Please submit mss in body of email to sleepyheadcentral@gmail.com with “VITAMINZZZ Submission” in the Subject line. No snail mail submissions, no attachments (firm).

2. Submit only 1 (1000-word+) prose submission at a time, or up to 5 poems or 2 flash prose pieces (totaling up to 1000 words) at a time.

3. Previously published work okay as long as you retain rights. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but SHC asks that you notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.

4. In lieu of an author’s bio, please send a reference to where you live (i.e. John Smith lives in Pennsylvania, or John Smith lives in Reading, PA), any prior publishers of your submitted work that SHC will need to credit, and a 100-word personal statement about your relationship with sleep and/or dreams. Please see examples from the early series published in July 2017 for ideas for how to tackle this.

Please allow 3 months’ reply time after submitting work for SHC to process and reply to your submission. If accepted, your work will appear on a digital panel similar to the ones used in the July 2017 feature series; in this way, SHC can preserve line breaks for those works which use them. If your work is not accepted, we will let you know within 3 months.

These are complete guidelines. If you have other questions, please send them to sleepyheadcentral@gmail.com with “VITAMINZZZ” in the Subject line. You may also wish to learn more about this project by visiting our Vitamin Zzz page.
