Eclipse moves Monday Morning Coffee to Tea Time Tuesday for August 22, 2017

Tuesday Tea Time brings you news links and other media all about sleep.

SHC has vetted the week’s sleep news so you don’t have to! Happy post-eclipse Tuesday!

eclipse glassesThis week, SHC skips its Monday morning roundup of sleep news in order to attend a solar event you might have heard about.

We enjoyed 94 percent totality here in the Puget Sound (north of Totality Zone, Oregon), and it was pretty spectacular and more than a little fun, taken in with little ones ages 10 and under in the neighborhood.

And yes, we all used the glasses.

Today we return to our normally scheduled program, to catch up and reflect upon recent news, all with a cup of tea or java (you pick)!

Management of Sleep-Wake Disturbances Comorbid With Cancer

[I]n a randomly selected sample of 948 adults in Canada, 76% of all reported insomnia-related expenses resulted from work absences and reduced productivity. Since cancer survivors often depend on employment for economic survival and insurance benefits, access to effective treatments for sleep-wake disturbances, insomnia, and sleep disorders is critical. The personal and societal burden of chronic sleep-wake disturbances, especially in people with cancer, needs to be addressed.(click headline for more)

Sleepless tech users sacrifice sleep health

The National Sleep Foundation’s (NSF) latest Sleep Health Index® (SHI) finds significant associations between technology use in bed and sleep health. Forty-eight percent of American adults reported using a device like a computer, tablet, or smartphone in bed before trying to go to sleep.  These people averaged two points lower on the overall SHI (75 vs. 77, on a 1 to 100 scale) and five points lower on the sleep quality subindex (65 vs. 70) than those who refrained from technology use in bed.(click headline for more)

Shift work and driver fatigue ended Dr. Brandon Rogers’ life

Only a few months ago, a well-liked young physician, serving a family medicine residency at Riverside Brentwood Medical Center in Virginia, was invited to audition for America’s Got Talent. …Dr. Rogers, a graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, was described as ‘the singing doctor, and ‘a standout contestant’ in the show. …On June 9 in Maryland, not long after the audition had taken place, but before it had even aired on television, Dr. Rogers was riding in a car driven by a friend who’d just come off a long shift at work. …The driver fell asleep at the wheel and the car veered off the road before striking a tree head on. While the driver and another passenger in the back seat survived, Dr. Rogers was seriously injured. He died the next day in the hospital at age 29.(click headline for more)
