Sleep News 24/7:

Back to School… Already???

Don't wait until the night before school to get your kids' sleep schedules back in tune with their school schedules

Back to School… already?

Nobody wants to think about it, but for many families across the country, summer is almost over. Mid-August is start time for many districts, regardless how sunny the weather is outside. And that means those families need to be thinking about transitioning their kids back to a sleep schedule that matches their school schedule.

What’s up in August

SHC will run a little leaner and lighter this month but the content is still going to be rich and useful to readers!

  • SHC discusses a variety of angles on the Back to School theme:
    • Teens and sleep (drowsy driving, sleep deprivation statistics and risk factors, later bell times)
    • What to expect when school-aged children don’t get enough sleep, short- and long-term
    • Family sized sleep hygiene tips
    • The Start School Later effort in review
    • Controversial ideas in sleep: nap times for high school students?
    • What happens when your kids (school aged through college) have sleep problems that aren’t caused by a sleep or medical disorder
    • Collection: Better bedtime solutions for kids of all ages
    • Cracking down on teachers, coaches, and other adults usurping “zero period”
  • August continues the Sleep Fundamentals “alphabet” series with an updated discussion and definition, “I is for Insomnia.”
  • Readers will also receive their weekly Monday Morning Coffee curation (which may sometimes shift to the afternoon edition, known as the 3pm Decaf Drip because sleep hygiene! But also because SHC is nothing without its smart news feed… and it is summer time, and I might not be back from sleeping outside (camping) over long weekends to give you the morning edition! I promise the content is still just as awesome no matter what time of day.
  • Another regular feature to expect will be a Drowsy Driving News Drip highlighting new content we’ve found on this topic since June 30.
  • Wordless Wednesdays will shine a light on diagrams and charts that illustrate the problems with early school start times for our teenagers.

Thanks so much for reading SHC, I hope you have found what you are looking for. You can find my work as a sleep health educator via other sources, such as the American Sleep Apnea Association blog, Sleeptember forum and Facebook group; the “While You Were Sleeping” series for the American Association of Sleep Technologists and A2Zzz, the AAST quarterly magazine; and through my busy Twitter feed @sleepyheadctrl.  Also, a quick nod to Shannon Witherington at Advanced Cardiovascular Sleep Disorders Center for reprinting SHC content at their new blog!
