How circadian rhythms work

How it works

Light enters the eye, is transported to the brain via the optic nerve, which is received by the main body clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN). The SCN, through a neurochemical process, uses the light information matched with other incoming data (such as digestion and other time cues, known as zeitgebers) to determine what’s happening inside the body (physiology) or how the individual will behave (such as falling asleep at night or waking up in the morning).
